The Need
In 1992, 1700 of the world's leading scientists, including the majority of Nobel Laureates signed a "Warning to Humanity" stating that all eco-systems are in imminent collapse and human survival and all living species are imperiled. Details are peripheral to the central truth: we are a planet under siege, and time is running out.
Across the United States, dedicated local activists are working tirelessly to preserve and restore the environment in their communities. Though their effort and impact are invaluable, many challenges threatening the Earth's health must be addressed on a scale much larger than these activists can possibly provide on their own.
To tackle the key environmental issues of our time, including global warming, habitat and biodiversity loss, water and air pollution, and soil depletion and erosion, action must be taken throughout the country to promote widespread understanding and involvement at the local level. While activists understand the need to engage the public and other sectors of their communities, they often have limited resources with which to do so, including limited funding, manpower and social connections. Additionally, the complexity, enormity and sometimes intangibility of these challenges make the task of spreading their message all the more difficult.
A great need exists across the country for compelling and vibrant environmental programs which can guide individuals in their communities in taking concrete action for real sustainable change.
At each ReelGreen event, the lead organizer, hosts and local activists bring together community leaders to facilitate workshops that focus on a sustainability model that they would like to implement. The ideal event is one weekend and includes several films that specifically address the problem and solution. Whether the goal is fighting a local coal burning plant down the street, cleaning up the river or demanding clean renewable energy from local municipalities, the activist/facilitator and their communities unite in strategic actions for change.
REEL GREEN films are the spark to ignite the fire that will galvanize a movement across America. Our objective is to educate the public on the significant threats to our global environment, and bring awareness to the powerful solutions that are available to us locally. Whether that be investing in socially responsibly responsible businesses, or forming people’s green power cooperatives, each community chooses the most realistic and timely actions toward a sustainable society.
